Hot Cacao with Reishi and Turmeric for the Heart and Soul

When the weather cools down, I find that the body craves more warm, nurturing foods and beverages. Foods that not only nourish the body, but the soul as well. The star of my morning ritual this last month in Medellin has been this cozy, ultra heartwarming and anti-inflammatory Hot Cacao with Reishi and Turmeric.

Not only is this a healthy and superfoods enhanced twist on the classic hot chocolate beverage of our childhood, but this hot cacao with reishi and turmeric combines the antioxidants of cacao with the adaptogen benefits of reishi and the anti-inflammatory effects of turmeric. Meaning, it is loaded with health optimizing and wellness enhancing goodness. Let’s take a closer look at why I chose some of these ingredients.

Cacao Powder

Cacao. Cacao is a potent source of antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. It contains compounds that may improve mood and reduce stress and is also rich in minerals like magnesium, essential for muscle and nerve function. Dark chocolate made from cacao can have heart-healthy benefits by improving blood flow and lowering blood pressure when consumed in moderation.

Reishi Mushroom. Reishi is celebrated for its adaptogenic properties, which assist the body in adapting to stress and maintaining balance. It's known to support the immune system, reduce inflammation, and may improve overall well-being. Reishi contains bioactive compounds that have potential anti-cancer, anti-viral and anti-bacterial effects, making it a valuable addition to your wellness routine.

Turmeric. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory spice due to its active compound, curcumin. It's known for reducing inflammation and may help alleviate symptoms of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Turmeric is also packed with antioxidants and may aid in improving brain function, lowering the risk of heart disease, and even potentially combating depression and age-related chronic diseases.

Cinnamon. Cinnamon is not only a flavorful spice but also a source of antioxidants that help protect cells from damage. It has been linked to improved insulin sensitivity, making it beneficial for managing blood sugar levels and potentially reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Cinnamon also possesses anti-inflammatory properties and may contribute to heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure when consumed as part of a balanced diet.

Hot Cacao with Reishi and Turmeric Recipe:

  • 1 Cup unsweetened plant-based milk (I like oat or coconut milk)
  • 2 Tablespoons raw cacao powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Reishi mushroom powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 Teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • A pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 1-2 Teaspoons maple syrup or agave (optional)
  • A pinch of black pepper (to enhance turmeric absorption)
  • A small pinch of sea salt

Directions:

In a small saucepan, gently heat the plant-based milk over low to medium heat. Be careful not to boil it, you want it warm but not scalding. Once the plsnt-based milk is warm, slowly add the raw cacao powder, Reishi mushroom powder, turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper and sea salt to the saucepan while whisking continuously to prevent lumps

Continue to whisk the mixture over low heat until it's well combined and slightly thickened. This should take about 3-5 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the sweetener and adjust the sweetness to your liking. Pour your Reishi and Hot Cacao into a mug and sprinkle a little extra cinnamon or nutmeg on top and enjoy!
